Why people keep pidgeons
This was the explanation given to me by Alan, my first boss after University, for me finding work a little dull after the freedom of being a student. "Of course your job's f***ing boring Turnballs" he berated, "so's mine, so's Betty's.....so's everyone's.... That's why people keep pidgeons!".
He also had a lovely homespun way of dealing with depression: he found it hillarious. I remember the tears running down his face as he recalled the decent of one of his colleagues who started off by coming in late and then missing days and eventually (and this memory nearly incapacitated him with mirth) he couldn't get out of bed and as a result lost his job and home. Other forms of mental illness similarly gave him joy such as the salesmen who ended up in the cement after a spectacular breakdown....
